Blogs around the World

Here's another Crazy Oscar Jr. Blog-Project.™ I'm hoping to find reasonable, approximately-English-written sites in as many countries as possible. Since CNN has admitted its dishonesty, I want my news direct!

This is obviously a work (just) in progress. (I haven't even made it through my blogroll yet.) I'll try to add more sites as time allows, and happily seek suggestions (which may or may not be honored). I'll post a link to this post on the sidebar (replacing the now unnecessary "Saddam Futures" link). I hope any readers will find the list as useful as I expect it to be.

Here goes:

The rest of the post has been moved to a page of its own. Please CLICK and, if you've been kind enough to link to this post, update your link.

Thanks!

I noticed there is nothing in UK and Nigeria slots. I'm a nigerian blogging in the Uk if that helps.

Posted by: Remi at 04:17 AM

Yes, I've only just begun this project. Thanks for visiting -- I'll spend some time at your site tonight. While I have many U.K. blogs on the sidebar, if you know if any fellow Nigerian bloggers, please let me know.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 08:47 AM

I've got some that you don't have on your list at this link:

Posted by: Kathy K at 07:33 AM

Ms. K, thanks! I'm pretty sure I've taken a few of the links above from your page, but I may have missed some. I'll be back...

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 10:37 AM

I have some on my links page as well.

Thimbleful of Thorns : "Quick jabs at Death and the whores it rides in on" is a blog by an American in Taiwan.

Drop by when you've some free time. Best, M

Posted by: Malthusiast at 02:31 PM

What an excellent project! Well done!

Posted by: Perry de Havilland at 10:10 PM

Remi and Malthusiast:

Thanks for visiting. I've added you both to the list, and hope you'll occasionally post news from your former and current homes.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 10:30 PM

Perry:

Thank you. I hope this will be a valuable resource. Many of the blogs above really are excellent (including yours, of course).

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 10:35 PM

Excellent idea! I had been thinking about listing my blog links geographically, and trying to find ones as all over as possible. You've beat me to it. I will gleefully raid you for interesting links!

May I propose, for Latvia:
All About Latvia
http://www.russianlegs.com/latvia/

For Ireland:
Fenian Ramblings
http://fenian.blogspot.com/

A Taste of Africa is technically Somaliland if you want to recognize that country (which was independent in the past, before as it is currently being part of Somalia), but otherwise as far as much of the world is concerned, it is indeed part of Somalia.

For Bulgaria:
Xiled in Sofia
http://radio.weblogs.com/0121075/
(An expat working there.)

Guess that's all I can add or comment for now.

Posted by: Jay Solo at 03:15 AM

Jay:

Thanks!, and thanks for the fine suggestions. I like them all, and have added them. (I had looked at Xiled in Sofia previously, but omitted the site as the author seems to be winding it down.)

If you find additional sites worth including on the list, please let me know.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 09:49 AM

Just found Peaktalk, in the Netherlands, http://www.peaktalk.com/, courtesy of a mention on Little Tiny Lies.

Posted by: Jay Solo at 03:10 PM

Jay:

Actually, the author of Peaktalk studied in the Netherlands, but is based in Canada now:

Today I am based on Canada’s Pacific Coast and together with my wife run a small consulting practice that focuses on getting start-up companies organized and financed, business formation for lack of a better word. It has seen me involved in the entertainment, fuel cell and digital media industries and I am now adding the blog to the activities, I hope it doesn’t scare any of our clients.

My point of view is thus North American and by that I mean the U.S.A. and Canada, in that order. Given my background, I will from time to time lace the daily blog with some Dutch and Asian interjections, when appropriate.

I was going to add his blog under Canada, but, given the second paragraph above, haven't yet decided.

Thanks again, though.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 03:17 PM

Yeah, it does get kinda fuzzy sometimes!

Posted by: Jay Solo at 04:30 AM

Thanks for adding FARRAGO to your list.

Tou might want to have a look at this for Zimbabwe:

http://africantears.netfirms.com/thisweek.htm

(I am not sure whether it can officially be described as a blog - but I think it is the closest one will get for Zim.)

Posted by: FARRAGO at 04:55 AM

Flying Chair (flyingchair.net) is a Brit blogging from HK. He does news, too.

(Thanks for the link.)

Posted by: andrea at 09:24 AM

Farrago:

Thanks for the link for Zimbabwe -- I'll take a look in the morning. I certainly would like to find a blog from there.

Andrea:

Thanks, too, for the HK link. I've been reading your site since the early Instafeller days.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 12:36 AM

I permalinked this project/post "above the fold" on my blog, in hopes of driving a few more people here. Might not hurt to permalink it at the top of your own site as well, else it'll just scroll out of sight and not get more sites suggested.

Maybe even give it its own page?

Posted by: Jay Solo at 04:08 PM

Jay:

Thanks for the permalink. I've got one on the sidebar, but I think I'll move it closer to the top of the page.

I like the idea of making the project a standalone page, too.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 08:56 PM

Have you seen this site?

http://pepys.akacooties.com/

Over a thousand blogs listed.

Posted by: Linkmeister at 03:05 AM

Linkmeister:

That looks to be a handy resource -- thank you.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 06:16 AM

Thanks so much for linking! Fairly phoney typhoon season is upon us. Nice to have a clear night sky. (Oops, it's cloudy...) SARS hysteria is muted--but don't access my blog till you've washed your mouse! Best to all, M

Posted by: Malthusiast at 06:21 AM

M:

My pleasure. And thanks for the SARS warning. I hadn't thought of that.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 06:30 AM

Good list! You ought to work for

they could do with your help!

By the way, I have a list of Ghanaian/African blogs on my site.

Posted by: Doobs at 07:27 PM

Doobs:

Thanks! Coincidentally, I found Globe of Blogs last night, but I haven't had a chance to explore it yet.

I'd also briefly visited your site via, I think, a link I found at Remi's. I hope to explore it more soon.

Thanks for visiting.

There's a new Iran blog in English, http://www.ladysun.blogspot.com/ by a prominent Persian blogger.

Posted by: Jay Solo at 03:55 PM

Carrie and Jay:

Your suggested sites (and Carrie's site) have been added to the list as noted here.

This project has a long way to go, but I'm liking the list as it develops.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 12:51 AM

Great idea. I am looking for more expat sites, but if you want to include my site while we are living in Nigeria, that'd be great. I occasionally ramble abou Nigeria and living here as an American. But, also talk alot about my kids!

Posted by: John Olson at 03:04 AM

Thank you, John.

I'll be adding your site on the next update.

Posted by: Oscar Jr. at 02:11 PM

For other China blogs, the largest list is at Sinospice's China Blog List. Another good stop is the aggregator at the group blog Living in China. Living in China's mother site is one called Living on the Planet. This blog network is still under construction but some of the current sites in the network are Living in India, Living in Australia, Living in Latin America, and Living in Europe.

Oscar Jr.:

Thanks for publishing the link to my blog (Sal DeTraglia's Virtual Tapas Bar) under the Spain category of your webpage. It was quite a surprise when I stumbled upon it. Now, maybe, someone beyond my wife, mother and mother-in-law will read my babblings. If these are my 15 minutes of fame, I'd better uncork a bottle of Cava quickly.

Great idea. Please keep up the good work.

What do you mean by "APPROXIMATELY-English-written sites"? Those sites where people make mistakes because of not speaking English as their native language?

Dave, I probably should have written "at least approximately-English-written," but the sites that you describe are certainly eligible.
